DETROIT — The Detroit NAACP’s decision to honor Kid Rock for his Motor City advocacy is sparking criticism by a supporter of the civil rights group for the musician’s use of the Confederate flag on-stage.

Political consultant Adolph Mongo tells The Detroit News and television stations WDIV and WJBK that he’s planning a boycott of the annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner May 1. That’s where Kid Rock is scheduled to receive the Detroit chapter’s Great Expectations Award.

Mongo says the flag is a symbol of hatred and racism.

The NAACP branch says in a statement that Kid Rock is committed to the city and represents its people.

The Associated Press left messages Friday afternoon for NAACP-Detroit Branch President the Rev. Wendell Anthony and a Kid Rock spokesman.
