An 18-year-old man fatally shot himself with a gun in his Charlotte, North Carolina home Sunday night. Several family members were in the home at the time of the incident.

His mother, Annie Bratton, says she didn’t know the teen, Staten Bratton, owned a gun. She now wants others to learn from the incident, warning parents “If you feel your child has a gun, check.”

It sounded like a firecracker”, said Annie Bratton, mother of Staten Bratton, 18, who died after fatally shooting himself Sunday night. “When I got there he was laying on his back.”
