She’s not our queen. When last I checked we are a Democratic-Republic, not a monarchy. The queen of England is just another person to us. We threw that tea in Boston Harbor and kicked their butts out in 1776. I don’t know why the British are so hooty snooty about their monarchy anyway. If they would nix the queen they would save a lot of money. Michelle Obama should tastefully tell the queen to kiss her NBA.

I am VERY sorry that your father is no longer here. The fact that mine is still on this earth certainly DOES NOT give him the right to hug whomever he wants whenever HE wants. My father was in Japan…not America… and he has to respect the rules (protocol) of this country when he is here. That was the point. And furthermore, it was my DUTY as his daughter to inform him that he was making people he hugged uncomfortable…so HECK NO… I am not ashamed of telling him what I told him.

Not to be nasty or anything, but maybe you should learn a little something about Japanese culture (if you haven’t already) before you attempt to judge me.

Had this happened 4 years ago,and it were First Lady Bush embracing her, the whole affair would have taken a different spin. The image would have been immortalized…sold late-night on infommercials…china sets, blankets, limited-edition coin sets….the caption would..read,”Two Queens embracing”
So what is it about Mrs. Obama that’s different?

What is it about her hand that makes touching her with it defile this lady?

Shouldn’t the Queen be equally honored to be in First Lady Obama’s presence?

I can agree with several of the opinions already posted on this blog. Why are mountains being made out of mole hills? Sometimes it seems that America is finally being accepted in the world community as a nation. Eventhough we are still an upstart nation still in puberty when you compare our existence to rest of the world’s nations. The queen welcomed our First Lady with a mutual respect and regard. This can be seen as gesture of warmth and friendliness and not as a breach of protocol.

I personlly think it is sad how petty some people are. The Unted States facing far more important issues and we was as us citizen need to figure out how we can come together and help solve this situation instead looking to the president to solve it all. I understand the whole ettiquette thing and you can’t touch the queen rule. I feel that if the queen made the 1st move then that was pretty much the queens way letting mrs obama know she could hug her. I think the people who are making such a big deal over this need to grow up and focus on more important things like the issues we are facing in this country instead of what Mrs Obama wearing or who she is hugging.

Answer me this:
Before this infamous “HUG”, there was the handshake, a firm one at that, which her Majesty tbe Queen also initiated. According to your “RULE” the Queen IS NOT TO BE TOUCHED; so are insinuating that the First Lady should have pulled her hand back in order to avoid touching the Queen?
Think about it! For me the bottom line is the queen is a human being just like anyone else. One more thing, look at the position of their hands!

Ok, ok, I have seen this article on a few other sites, and I thought the same as a few others. Yes according to the English she did step out of line, but on the other hand. Please people come on, let’s be real; the queen has her not so fresh moments like every other woman. She is not the Virgin, (Christ’s mother). Well, as much as I LOVE our First Lady…I think she did step out of bounds with the touching that was done. It doesn’t matter that we Black folks show that kind of affection in the States, nor does it matter that the Queen touched the First Lady first. The rule is that the Queen is not to be touched, and as our First Lady, First Lady Obama should have extended that respect to the Queen. Most likely before the trip she was coached to not touch the Queen …and probably wasn’t really thinking much about it when she did it. Still, she slipped up.

That reminds me of when my father came to Japan and was hugging everybody. It made Japanese people VERY uncomfortable, so I asked him to stop. When I did, his response was: “Well, that’s how I greet folks back home.” I firmly reminded him that he wasn’t BACK HOME and that if he touched another person, I was going to put his butt on a plane and never invite him back.

My father was angry with me for not letting him be “himself” but as I explained this was not the place for that. It’s not up to us to determine whether the Queen ‘probably’ needs a hug or not…nor should we expect her to just ‘deal with it’ because that’s the way we do it in the good ‘ole USA. Such thought, in my opinion, is disrespectful, ethnocentric and arrogant. Come on folks… now you know we have more class than that!!

The main point to be learned: rules, whether legal or social, exist in foreign countries for reasons that may not be obvious to us as Americans. When President Obama and First Lady Obama travel abroad, they are GUESTS in those countries…and are not above following foreign rules, either.
