NEW YORK — A 17-year-old girl from Harlem who attended the prestigious Deerfield Academy in Connecticut has been released from Riker’s Island.

Afrika Owes was arrested and accused of transporting guns for her boyfriend, Jaquan “Jay Cash” Layne, in February and was incarcerated in Riker’s Island since then.

The New York Daily News reports:

Owes, who had been at Rikers since her arrest in February, was bailed out by Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church in April. She returned to school, and in July she accepted a plea deal after she pleaded guilty to felony gun charges. The deal with the judge spared her from a prison term, including a minimum 3 1/2 year sentence for a gun charge.

Owes will start her senior year at Millennium High School on Thurday,Sept. 8.

Meanwhile, the other accused gangbangers are set for trial, slated to start on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
