Dr. Conrad Murray is infamously known as the celebrity doctor accused of killing pop legend Michael Jackson.

But what most people don’t know about the doctor is his long list of academic accomplishments, his passion for caring for the under-served,  and his close ties with Jackson’s family.

Who was Conrad Murray before the notoriety and controversy?

1. Born On An Island

Murray was born on February 19, 1953 in St. Andrews, Grenada.

2. Daddy Wasn’t There

Murray did not meet his father, Rawle Andrews, a Houston-area physician, until he was 25.

3. Rough Upbringing

Murray grew up living mainly with his grandparents, two Grenadian farmers, while his mother spent much of her time in Trinidad and Tobago searching for work.

4. Youth Hustle

At the age of 19 he bought his first house, then later sold it to support his university tuition in the United States.

5. Top Scholar

Murray graduated from Texas Southern University in just three years. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in pre-medicine and biological sciences.

6. Medical School Student At Black college

Murray attended the primarily African-American Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.

7. Like Father, Like Son

Murray attended the same medical school that his father did, Meharry Medical College. He also started a private practice, as his father did, so he can serve under-served communities.

Murray moved to Las Vegas and opened a clinic in hopes of increasing his scope and growing his career.

9. MJ’s Right-Hand Man

Murray was contacted to treat one of Michael Jackson’s children in 2006. Jackson and Murray quickly became friends, eventually leading to Jackson hiring the doctor.

Murray founded Global Cardiovascular Associates in 2000 in Las Vegas.
