More than 45 years after the Department of Labor issued “The Moynihan Report,” a study which examined the breakdown of the Black family, sociologist Herbert Gans revisited the report, offering his own critique in the Fall 2011 issue of the Du Bois Review.

While many say The Moynihan Report predicted the implosion of the Black family, Gans disagrees.

The Root reports:

…the Report was flawed in a number of ways. First, Moynihan could even then have been criticized for failing to look at studies of the poor Black family and community other than those by Frazier (1939) and Clark (1965).
