DALLAS— An undercover police operation erupted in gunfire aboard an Amtrak train idling at Union Station in downtown Dallas, leaving a suspect dead and an undercover narcotics officer and a bystander wounded.
The incident happened about 4 p.m. Monday as Amtrak’s Texas Eagle from San Antonio to Chicago was nearing departure.
Three plainclothes officers were performing an inspection when they found a suspicious man aboard the train, said police Lt. Scott Walton. The officers confronted the suspect, who drew a handgun and opened fire, Walton said. An officer returned fire, killing the man.
The wounded officer and bystander, who also was a passenger, were taken to Baylor University Medical Center. The wounds suffered by the officer and nearby male passenger were not life-threatening, said Walton, a Dallas police spokesman. He did not release additional details about the wounds.
A Dallas police statement identified the wounded officer as Sr. Cpl. Samuel Hussey, a 22-year veteran of the force assigned to the Dallas Police Department’s Narcotics Division.
The identities of the dead suspect and wounded bystander were being withheld, Walton said.
A passenger seated about five rows behind the suspect said there was little warning before the gunfire began.
“I was looking down at my phone and all of the sudden I heard, ‘Get off me; get off me,’ and then ‘pop, pop, pop, pop,'” Jonathan Beaubien told WFAA-TV of Dallas and Fort Worth. “I hit the ground and then ran off the train.”
