What happens when outsiders to the HBCU community try to impact Black college culture? The answer may not be as straightforward as you think.
NEW YORK-President Barack Obama briefly broke into song at the world famous Apollo theater in Harlem during a fund raiser. While speaking to the crowd, Obama acknowledged legendary soul singer the Reverend Al Green, who performed before Obama spoke.
After Obama sang the first part of Green’s “Lets Stay Together,” “I’m so in love with you,” the crowd broke out in cheers. Obama would say “those guys didn’t think I would do it” and referenced the Apollo character who would chase bad performers off stage saying “the sandman did not come out.”
