Muslim MonitoringTRENTON, N.J. — Civil rights organizations are calling for investigations into the New York Police Department’s surveillance of Muslims in the Northeast.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut said Thursday it is among 10 groups that requested investigations in letters to state police, cities, and the presidents of Yale University and the University of Connecticut.

And the Pennsylvania ACLU says it submitted a complaint to the state attorney general demanding an investigation on NYPD practices there.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press show that the NYPD has built databases pinpointing where Muslims live, where they buy groceries, what Internet cafes they use and where they watch sports.

The complaints follow strong comments Wednesday by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie about what he called the NYPD’s “masters of the universe” mentality.
