Although African Americans make up just 13 percent of the U.S. population, we account for 33 percent of the missing in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s database. Cases involving African Americans also tend to receive less media coverage than missing Whites, with missing men of color getting even less attention.

NewsOne has partnered with the Black and Missing Foundation and TV One to focus on the crisis of missing African Americans.

To be a part of the solution, NewsOne will profile a missing person weekly and provide tips about how to keep your loved ones safe and what to do if someone goes missing, while TV One‘s newest show, “Find Our Missing,” hosted by award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson, tells these stories in visual form.

Circumstances of Disappearance: Hassani and his younger sister lived with their aunt, Jennifer Campbell, who is also their foster mother and legal guardian. According to Jennifer Campbell’s fiancée, Louis Ross, he parked the car in the back parking lot behind Jennifer’s place of employment. He took the younger child inside the store, and when he went back outside to get Hassani, he was no longer in the vehicle.

The district attorney reviewed a police report regarding Ross, and Teresa Drenick, spokesperson for the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, told NewsOne in an interview, “That case was reviewed and no charges were filed.”

According to CBS in San Francisco, the couple has since moved out of the state.

Johnna Watson, a spokeswoman for the Oakland Police Department, told NewsOne they haven’t given up on the case.

“We are still actively open and looking for any information in that case,” Watson told NewsOne in an interview.

“We have had leads and investigators have followed those leads,” Watson added.

The public wants the case to be resolved.

”It’s sad that we haven’t been able to bring justice for Hassani,” Sherri-Lyn Miller, who founded a group called “Citizens for the Lost,” told CBS in San Francisco last year. “I wish we could do more, but we realized after talking to the district attorney and homicide investigators that there is no more that we could possibly do.”

Last Seen Wearing: A gray sweatshirt and gray pants. He wears braces on his ankles.

Identifying Marks or Characteristics: Hassani has cerebral palsy.
