The rapper was one of the first recognizable female rappers during an era in which the genre was once heavily dominated by men. She dropped her first single, “Hype According to Ms. Melodie,” in 1988 and an album, “Diva,” in 1989 on Jive Records.

Here most memorable performance was in the classic music video, “Self-Destruction.”

She was formerly married to KRS-ONE.
