When one thinks of ways to pay homage to the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, naming a violent street gang in his honor probably doesn’t top the list. Plant a tree, maybe, or feed the homeless, but forming a band of thugs?

Well, allegedly, that’s exactly what occurred in St. Louis, Missouri. One member of the ‘Obama Boyz’, Anthony Jamal Lee, 18, now “faces a mix of 10 felony counts of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and firing shots from a vehicle,” reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

“[Lee] fired at a group of people from the window of a Grand Prix at 2:17 p.m., according to charges. A 13-year-old boy was struck in the side of his body and had to be hospitalized; a 17-year-old boy was grazed by bullets on his face and arm.

Lee, according to authorities, then fired from his car at two passengers in another Grand Prix, grazing one of them in the back.”

Judge Theresa Burke set his bond at $100,000.

It’s a sad, sad day when the only thing that the election of the first Black president motivates a group of young Black men to do is name a gang after him. The pathetic part is, they probably think it’s cool.
