Elzina Brown became the first murder victim of 2013 after she tried to protect her 22-year-old daughter during a domestic dispute at her home in the Bronx on Thursday, the New York Daily News reports.

Brown, 59, was home during her lunch break around 1:30 p.m. when her daughter, Diamond Dunn, and her boyfriend, Raymond Mayrant, were reportedly arguing over their 4-year-old daughter. Mayrant, 25, allegedly pulled a gun out and aimed it at Dunn. Brown got between the boyfriend and the gunman and was shot in the chest. She died at the scene. Mayrant reportedly shot Dunn in the face before fleeing the scene.

The couple have a 4-year-old daughter together.

Dunn is expected to survive and is listen in stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center, according to the Wall Street Journal. Though, the Daily News reports that a friend of Dunn’s says the victim is in bad shape. “But her face is basically gone.” The friend, who did not want to be identified, said that Dunn and Mayrant fought often. “I don’t know why she was with him,” she said. “He abused her in every way possible.”

Mayrant is believed to have fled to Norfolk, Va., where he lives. The suspect was reportedly in New York City to visit his daughter. The New York Post reports that Mayrant has prior arrests for assault, grand larceny, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.

Brown was an NYPD school-crossing guard at the time of her death. She was known was a hard-working woman who was known to look after her neighbors’ children. Andre Williams, 54, grew up with Brown and told The Journal that Dunn sings in a church choir.

“These were good people,” he said. “That’s why this hurts so much.”
