crime-scene-tapeSchool officials confiscated a loaded handgun from a third-grader at Daly Elementary School in Detroit after responding to a tip Friday morning, reports KTLA.com.

“We want to assure the community that the students of Daly Elementary are safe. No one was harmed,” said Val Hughes, executive director of instruction for Westwood Community Schools.

“This is a very serious matter,” Hughes said. “I’m very proud someone told. That’s what we try to instill in our students. If someone has something that’s going to hurt someone, or yourself, or you see something that you consider wrong, share that with an adult.”

According to Fox News, the child brought the gun to school on Thursday and a classmate went home and told his mother, who called the school the next morning around 8:30 a.m.. They checked the student and he had brought the same gun again. It was confiscated around 9:00 a.m.

This is not the first time that a child has brought a gun to school in recent memory.

As previously reported by NewsOne, a sixth-grade student at West Kearns Elementary School in Kearns, Utah was taken into police custody last month and charged with multiple counts of assault after bringing a gun to school Monday.

According to school officials, he claimed that he was protecting himself against a shooting like the one that took place in Newtown, Connecticut when 20-year-old Adam Lanza forced himself into Sandy Hook Elementary and killed 20 children — ages 6 and 7 — and 6 adults, before killing himself.

The student in Detroit claims that he bought the gun to school because he was being bullied.
