An unidentified middle schooler was arrested Saturday, then admitted to a local hospital for evaluation following an alleged emailed to a school administrator threatening to open fire on 23 classmates and one teacher, reports NBC San Diego.

SEE ALSO:

The child, who attends Twin Peaks Middle School in Poway, Calif., mentioned 3,000 rounds of ammunition and firearms in his email and confessed to plotting a mass shooting that would have taken place on Monday, Feb. 11. The email stated the time of the shooting and listed some specific locations on campus where the shooting would occur. The specific names of the 23 children, however, were not referenced in the email.

Police investigators believe the young suspect had planned on carrying out his plot without the assistance of anyone.

When police went to the 7th grader’s home, they uncovered and seized numerous rifles, handguns, shotguns and computers.

According to Poway Unified School District superintendent Joan Collins, who submitted a statement to NBC San Diego, “Obviously, this situation is both saddening and disturbing. However, it is critical that all touched by this threat understand that the system worked.”

The unidentified teacher whom the child targeted is greatly distraught and puzzled as to why he would want her dead. “I kept asking myself, `Why me?’ Literally wracking my brain trying to figure out who it is,” said the educator.

As for the child’s parents, according to police, they were “shocked” and upset over the situation. The guns police found had been locked and in the custody of the child’s father. Police investigators also confirmed the suspect appeared afraid when officials questioned him.

The case will be investigated by the district attorney’s office who will decide whether the child will be pursued as a juvenile or adult.

Schools across the country are re-examining the state of their security, which was sparked by the Newtown, Conn., shootings where lone gunman, Adam Lanza, entered an elementary school Dec. 14 and brutally gunned down 20 children and six educators.
