LONG BEACH, Calif. — A homeless man suspected of setting a man on fire in a car outside a Southern California convenience store has been charged with murder.
Los Angeles County prosecutors say 38-year-old Raymond Sean Clark was charged Tuesday with murder with special circumstances. He remains jailed and prosecutors will decide whether to seek the death penalty.
Authorities say 63-year-old Jerry Payne was sitting in his SUV outside a Long Beach 7-Eleven on Friday when Clark walked up and tossed a flammable substance inside. The Long Beach man was enveloped in flames.
Bystanders helped douse Payne with water but he died at a hospital on Monday.
Clark was arrested nearby. Investigators are trying to determine what motivated the attack.
As previously reported by NewsOne, the motivation behind the attack may have been connected to Payne allegedly refusing Clarke’s request for money.
