The best scene in the movie Demolition Man has the movie’s star, Sylvester Stallone, waking up in the future after having been cryogenically frozen, only to learn that action hero Arnold Schwarzegger had been president. This scene is hilarious for two reasons.

  • 1. Stallone’s personal rivalry with Schwarzenegger as competing acting stars allowed Stallone’s character to greet the news as if it were the worst of all possible scenarios.
  • 2. The prospect of a foreign-born, vocally illiterate man becoming president is absurd.

But now as I watch a group that is being mockingly called the “Birthers” continue to clamor for proof that President Obama is indeed a national-born American citizen despite the fact that a birth certificate has been provided more than once, I finally get what the Republican brain trust is up to.

Anyone in a negotiation knows that if you want, say, a $5K raise, you ask for a $10K raise, then act offended to settle for your original intent.

Similarly, by making such a big stink about the possibility that Barack Obama was born overseas, what the Republicans are likely to do next is push for an amendment to Section 1 of Article Two of the United States Constitution:

“…No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President…”

Make no mistake as far as Barack Obama is concerned; the Republicans have already taken that loss. Unlike the Democrats whose constituents are brainy but whose leadership is populated by idiots, the Republicans have geniuses for leaders and fools for followers.

So when the Republicans push on their people a hero who’s killed space aliens and Arab Terrorists, and who is also, by the way, married to a Kennedy-for all you liberals on the fence-the brainless masses will swallow it up.

The Republican goal is to wear the opposition down to the point where they can suggest (as if it just occurred to them) “Well, F it then! Why don’t we just amend Section 1 of the Article Two so that anybody can run?” The Democrats will be so exhausted that they’ll happily accept. After Schwarzenegger is successfully on the ticket, watch the Republicans next bring the sexy back by returning a freshly schooled Sarah Palin to her vice presidential spot.

2012’s a risky race but it’s also the most likely that you’ll see Schwarzenegger/Palin.

Which way are you gonna vote?
