The Harrison family; inset Chazrel Jaquan BurtonChazrel Jaquan Burton, 21, has been charged with 3 counts of attempted murder for the June 26 shooting of a man and his family, during which a 2-year-old toddler was injured, reports the

Burton was attempting to rob someone in a Kroger grocery store parking lot on Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain, Georgia when Jermaine Harrison stepped in to stop him. In retaliation, Burton shot at him and fired bullets at his car. Two-year-old Evan Harrison and his mother were inside of the car. The child was struck in a hail of gunfire.

Read more from the AJC:

A DeKalb grand jury on Thursday indicted Burton on three counts of attempted murder, along with three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of gun possession during the commission of a crime, first-degree child cruelty, first-degree criminal damage and robbery.

Chazrel fled the scene and eluded police capture for several days, before a wide-scale search led to his surrender on July 3.

He is being held in the DeKalb County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

Young Evan was shot in the abdomen and was placed on a ventilator after the shooting.

He is currently 80 percent healed, reports the AJC, and Harrison said all he could was rely on his faith.

“It’s amazing how far he’s come,” said Harrison.  “I had faith that he would pull through, and that I wouldn’t lose him in front of my eyes,” said Harrison. “Faith and I just hoped for the best.”
