R&B singer Sevyn Streeter (pictured) recently opened up about comments she’s received about being “beautiful” for a dark-skinned girl.

Speaking with The Grio, Streeter says that she’s largely indifferent to such comments:

I don’t take it personally. I feel like everyone has a preference. You have women who don’t like shorter guys. You have women who like taller guys. You have women who like heavier men. You have women who like smaller men. It’s the same thing with men. You have men who prefer lighter women and men who prefer darker women.

While she would like to understand why people make such comments, Streeter believes it all comes down to how you perceive yourself:

[People] do get offended by those comments, but I think it comes down to how you feel about yourself. And obviously I’ve heard it before, but when people tell me, ‘Oh, you’re pretty for a dark skinned girl,’ I always ask,’Well, what does that mean?’ or ‘Why do you feel that way?’ I like to get into their mind frames and engage and have a conversation about it.

I don’t really judge anyone, your preference is your preference, as long as you respect everyone else’s preferences, do you, I appreciate the compliment I know who I am. I’m very confident in my skin and I love myself so it doesn’t really bother me.

The self-proclaimed “chocolate skin beauty” also shared how she got into writing songs for other artists in the genre, beginning with Chris Brown and eventually Ariana Grande and Alicia Keys.

When asked if she prefers writing or performing, Streeter compared it to being forced to “choose between my two babies. For me, writing is therapeutic. On my artist side, I love being an artist cause I always say it feels like the 10-year-old girl in me that did the Apollo.”

Streeter is currently working on a debut solo album and an upcoming EP titled, “Call Me Crazy…But,” due out in stores November 5th.
