When the late Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990, after 27 years of confinement, the competition to get an interview with him was fierce. Fox News political analyst Juan Williams, who was then at The Washington Post, moved to the head of the pack in an unusual way. He shared the story with Roland Martin on NewsOne Now.

“They were throwing me out when he said,’No, if you can handle some mail and want to write some letters for me,'” said Williams, “because he was getting all his congratulatory mail for getting out of prison. [He said] ‘If you can write it, you can hang around.'”

Hear who else was there in Mandela’s home in the clip below.
