An 11 year-old-boy in Chicago en route to get a Christmas haircut, was killed Saturday after a man fleeing from a carjacking slammed into his family’s vehicle, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Donovan Anthony Turnage, his father and older brother were on their way to the barbershop around 12:30 p.m.when the crash occurred. The accident was the result of a police chase that began when patrol officers witnessed an armed carjacking and proceeded to chase the fleeing suspect. According to Turnage’s father, the family was at a green light when the car came out of nowhere and struck the family vehicle from behind, causing the car to tailspin and land on the sidewalk.

Turnage was in the back seat, but “the impact was so hard it threw him out the back passenger window,” the boy’s mother Annette Turange told the Sun-Times. The 11-year-old was pronounced dead at University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital at 1:35 p.m. according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Annette says losing her son days before Christmas “is very painful.” “He was looking forward to opening his presents on Christmas,” she told the Sun-Times. “He took our angel away from us.”

A spokesperson for the Chicago police said the chase will be reviewed by the department’s Traffic Review Board.

The suspect managed to escape the scene after the accident by carjacking a second vehicle and speeding off. He eventually abandoned the car, a silver sports utility vehicle, in Oak Brook before carjacking a third vehicle, a 2007 Honda sedan. Police are still in search of the suspect.
