Black Love Day was founded in 1993 by Ayo Handy Kendi, director of the African American Holiday Association. According to Kendi, it is the third nationally observed black holiday – one of atonement, reconciliation and celebration. Black Love Day is observed as a 24-hour demonstration of black love, demonstrated through five specific acts: love towards the Creator, for self, for the family, within the black community and for the black race.

Ayo Handy Kendi, joined Roland Martin on “NewsOne Now” Thursday to explain the holiday’s origins and purpose. Listen to the interview below.
