March 25, 2014 is Diabetes Alert Day, a one-day “wake-up call” asking Americans public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

According to CDC, type 2 diabetes is a disease that especially affects millions of African Americans, who are at an even higher risk for this serious chronic condition. An estimated 3.7 million or 14.7 percent of all non-Hispanic blacks age 20 and older have diabetes.

Diabetes is a leading cause of:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney disease
  • Blindness
  • Amputation

Diabetes is also the seventh leading cause of death in the United States

The Diabetes Risk Test asks users to answer simple questions about weight, age, family history and other potential risk factors for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Preventive tips are provided for everyone who takes the test, including encouraging those at high risk to talk with their health care provider.
