Emancipation_celebration

April 16, 1862 marked the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia. Over 3,000 enslaved persons were freed eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation liberated slaves in the South. The District also has the distinction of being the only part of the United States to have compensated slave owners for freeing enslaved persons they held.

Artists Raheem DeVaughn, DJ Kool and Kasey from We Are Black Alley are set to perform this week at DC’s Emancipation Day events. The three stopped by “NewsOne Now” Tuesday to talk with host Roland Martin about the festivities and the impact music can have in social movements.

Listen to the full conversation below.

Be sure to listen to “NewsOne Now” with Roland Martin, weekdays at 7 a.m. EST and watch at 9 a.m. EST on TV One.
