According to NBC News, a potential E. coli contamination has triggered the recall of 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products.

The recalled meat, which was produced by Wolverine Packing Company of Detroit, has been linked to 11 people being sickened with E. coli O157:H7 infections, officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

E. coli O157:H7 is a dangerous type of germ that can cause severe food poisoning, and, in some cases, a deadly complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS. Children and the elderly tend to be the most vulnerable.

E. coli O157 symptoms can include:

  • Dehydration
  • Nausea
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping

Though recovery general occurs within a week, HUS can lead to kidney failure and death.

Illnesses include five in Michigan, four in Ohio and one each in Massachusetts and Missouri, CDC officials said. More than half of the victims have been hospitalized.

The affected products were shipped to distributors for restaurant use in Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. The ground beef was not used in federal Department of Defense programs, the National School Lunch Program or in catalog or internet sales, officials said.

The products were produced from March 31 to April 18 and have the establishment number “EST. 2574B” on them, according to the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
