Despite living at DC homeless shelter, high school senior earns full scholarship at Georgetown University

Rashema Melson, an Anacostia High School senior has a 4.0 GPA and just earned a scholarship to Georgetown University. “I feel accomplished,” she tells us. “I feel I did something worthy. I feel like I did it. But I’m not done yet.” What makes Rashema’s story all the more remarkable is when you consider where she comes from. For the past two years, Rashema, her mother and two siblings have been living at the D.C. homeless shelter. Martin Lawrence Returns to TV in New Comedy Series

Martin Lawrence will be returning to television this summer in the new buddy comedy seriesPartners. The half-hour series will star Lawrence and Kelsey Grammer as Chicago lawyers from vastly different backgrounds who develop a partnership after they unexpectedly meet in court on the worst day of their lives. Outside of making movies, Lawrence has made only brief TV appearances since Martin ended in 1997. Lawrence will also be joined by veteran TV actress Telma Hopkins, who was last seen in the Disney series Lab Rats. Maya Angelou Cancels MLB Beacon Awards Luncheon Appearance Because Of Health

Maya Angelou will not attend the 2014 MLB Beacon Awards Luncheon, where she will be honored. Major League Baseball cited “health reasons” Friday in saying the 86-year-old won’t make it to the May 30 event in Houston before the annual Civil Rights Game. Angelou canceled an event last month in Fayetteville, Arkansas, because she was recovering from an “unexpected ailment” that sent her to the hospital. Robin Roberts will be the keynote at the baseball event, which will also honor Motown Records founder Berry Gordy and football great Jim Brown. Angelou says in a statement she respects MLB for holding the annual event. She didn’t disclose the nature of her illness. Read more.

Houston Unveils MLK Memorial Statue Ending Decades of Drama

Houston elected officials, civil rights leaders and residents gathered Saturday to attend the unveiling of a bronze statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., ending decades of drama over its location and lack of funds to complete it, according to KHOU. A large crowd, including Martin Luther King IIII, was on hand for the unveiling at MacGregor Park, just south of downtown Houston, the report says. The movement continues, King said, according to KHOU, “until there is equal justice for everyone.” Read more.

Arizona Mom Who Left Kids in Car During Interview Gets Supervised Visitation

Shanesha Taylor, the Arizona mother accused of leaving her eight-month-old and two-year-old sons in her truck while she went on a job interview back in March, has received supervised visitation with her children. “This is a big victory for the defense,” attorney Benjamin Taylor says. “My client is looking forward to seeing her kids once again.” Read more.

Family Wants Whitney Houston Lifetime Movie Shutdown

Last week we were geeked to tell you that Angela Bassett is directing a Lifetime movie based on Whitney Houston’s life, but it appears not everyone is excited as we are about the new project. According to TMZ, the family of one of the greatest singers of all time isn’t feeling the Lifetime movie, saying Whitney’s legacy is far to great for a simple television movie. “Whitney is certainly worthy of more than a television movie,” Pat Houston told TMZ. “If Whitney were here today, this would not be happening.” Read more.
