Sheriff deputies arrested Derrick Nesby (pictured) Wednesday. The 37-year-old teaches at H.L. Bourgeois High School in Terrebonne Parish. He was reportedly intimate with a 16-year-old student at the school.

“We can establish the fact that there was an encounter that happened,” said Malcolm Wolfe, Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Chief of Detectives.

Investigators claim a school resource officer was first to hear word of the activity. Police are not saying when or where exactly the incident happened, however, they suspect it was sometime during the last school year. They also revealed that Nesby is a track coach at the school, and has only been there for a year. Nesby is denying all of the allegations.

“We continued our investigation where we established more evidence that something did happen, and at that point we got a warrant for his arrest,” Wolfe said.

Because he knowingly exposed the teen to the virus, Nesby also faces a charge of intentional exposure of the AIDS virus, along with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. A legal analyst says both charges could land Nesby some serious prison time.

“Both of these charges are felonies,” said Chick Foret. “Both of these charges carry with them the maximum prison sentence of 10 years in prison. They’re both very serious felonies.”

Though a judge originally set Nesby’s bond at $500,000, the AIDS exposure charge has doubled it to $1,000,000. He remains in jail as of this writing.
