NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A white TV reporter who voiced his opinions about black families and relations with police while reporting on a fatal New Jersey police shooting says he’s been suspended from his station and won’t return.

Sean Bergin says he was suspended from News 12 New Jersey without pay Monday and with pay Tuesday. The contracted employee says he was told his assignments would be cut to one a week.

The station says its reporters must be objective and not state personal opinions. It says Bergin’s report is being addressed and it doesn’t comment on personnel matters.

Bergin said in his report the underlying cause of anti-police sentiment is young black men growing up without fathers.

National Association of Black Journalists president Bob Butler says larger social issues lead to that sentiment in some communities.
