During an October 4 performance of “Requiem” by Brahms at the St. Louis symphony, demonstrators shocked patrons when they interrupted the orchestra with a protest song for Michael Brown, the Ferguson teen slain by police officer Darren Wilson on August 9.

Holding signs from the balcony which read: “A Requiem for Mike Brown,” “Racism Lives Here” and a third with a large sketch of Brown’s face with the dates 1996-2014, the years of the 18 year old’s birth and death, the demonstrators orchestrated a social justice flash mob and ended by chanting “Black Lives Matter.” The affirming call to action has become a defining rallying cry since Brown was killed, along with “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot.”

Some of the audience can be seen clapping and cheering, while others look on in amusement, shock and consternation. The orchestra looked on respectfully, with some members joining in the applause until the demonstration was over.
