The head of a southern New Jersey Catholic high school issued an apology Monday to Black players on the Atlantic City High basketball team after two of his students dressed as a monkey and banana at a recent game, according to Press of Atlantic City.

Reverend Perry Cherubini, president of Holy Spirit High School just outside of Atlantic City, released a statement apologizing to Atlantic City High School students, according to the news outlet.

Press of Atlantic City reports:

The school is working to deal with the fallout after the news broke Friday that two Holy Spirit students dressed in a monkey and banana costume and taunted Atlantic City players during a Feb 18. game. Other students dressed up in a variety of other costumes that evening. In addition to holding the assembly Monday, school officials also issued an apology for the incident.

“Holy Spirit offers our heartfelt apologies for offending anyone that evening,” the Rev. Perry Cherubini, school president, said in a statement.

Holy Spirit Principal Susan Dennen tells the news outlet that while the students will not be punished for their actions, “the school plans to work with” them on the issue during courses on religious history, crimes against humanity, and social justice courses.

That’s a good start, but in addition to Black History, they may want to think about adding racial sensitivity training.
