Over the past few months, the concept of “feminism” has been at the forefront of national conversation. Many celebs, including Beyoncé – who spearheaded her own “Flawless” feminist movement – have declared themselves feminists and used their platform to advocate for women’s equality. But are African-American women being pushed out of the feminist movement? Social activist Gloria Steinem believes so. In a recent interview, she spoke about the influence black women have had on feminism and how it excludes them. “I thought they invented the feminist movement. I know we all have different experiences, but I learned feminism disproportionately from black women,” she said. Read more.


Plane Crashes in the French Alps

A Lufthansa Germanwings airbus carrying 148 people in the French Alps reportedly crashed earlier Tuesday. All on board are feared dead, authorities say. The pilots placed a distress call about 52 minutes after takeoff. French President Francois Hollande said many of the passengers were Germans who were flying from Barcelona to Duesseldorf. “There were 148 people on board,” Hollande said. “The conditions of the accident, which have not yet been clarified, lead us to think there are no survivors.” Read more.


Angelina Jolie Has Ovaries Removed After Doctors Discover Early Signs of Cancer

Two years ago, actress Angelina Jolie underwent a preventive double mastectomy to avoid cancer. Just two weeks ago, after doctors detected possible early signs of the disease, Jolie had her ovaries removed. Her mother, grandmother, and aunt all passed away from the same affliction. She shared her experience in a candid op-ed piece that she penned for The New York Times. “I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that I had no reason to think I wouldn’t live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren,” she said.
