Jerry Kent and Alfred Liggins, co-chairs of INTX, on May 5, 2015 in Chicago/ Radio One

This week, thousands of cable television industry executives are gathering in Chicago for INTX, the Internet and Television Expo, co-chaired by Alfred C. Liggins, CEO and president of Radio One (the parent company of NewsOne) and TV One, and Jerry Kent, chairman and CEO of Suddenlink Communications. The confab is a rebranded version of National Cable & Telecommunications Association‘s “The Cable Show.”

The name change reflects a new focus on “the digital media and entertainment economy, featuring multichannel video and broadband Internet providers, television creators and producers, online video distributors, digital technologists and startups, engineers and more,” according to an NCTA press release.

In fact, during an interview with Re/Code‘s Kara Swisher on the first day of INTX, NCTA president Michael Powell (you may remember him from his time as FCC chair under President George W. Bush, or as the son of former Secretary of State Colin Powell) said it was time to move beyond the term “cable.”

Reported Broadcasting & Cable:

“I hate the name,” Powell said. “I do think it has a proud history but I think it has to be retired in some way because I think your past can be a part of your glory but it also can be a weight around your ankle. And it also doesn’t fairly capture what they do.”
