No matter what, Twitter has DeRay’s back.

On Wednesday, DeRay McKesson and Montel Williams engaged in a brief Twitter spat after the former talk show host critiqued McKesson’s career as an activist who flourished through his strong use of social media.

Williams’ statement comes after McKesson, a key member in spreading the news about the Black Lives Matter movement and the Ferguson protests, was slammed during his interview on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show. The host called McKesson a “professional protester” as he explained why he was unemployed. Hannity’s other guest Kevin Jackson also chimed in, forcing McKesson to defend himself and the Black Lives Matter movement.

According to Salon:

After McKesson explained that he’s currently unemployed, but has been using his savings and the assistance of friends to attend these protests, Hannity and Jackson both laughed, the former saying, “Well Kevin, I guess we have professional protesters now.”

Jackson attempted to shame McKesson, saying “I bet you haven’t been to the funeral of any cop who was killed in the line of duty,” or “to the celebration ceremonies of cops who have protected the lives of many, many black people for decades. I bet you haven’t been to the funerals of the kids who were killed at these scenarios where race-baiters and race-pimps like you appear.”

McKesson tried to get a word in, but Jackson refused, yelling “you’re getting paid, DeRay! You’re getting paid!”

After Williams’ Twitter comment, McKesson responded with love and admiration.

Others weren’t so nice, as the #MontelWilliamsLogic topic began to take form on Twitter.

At the end of the day, it’s apparent that McKesson isn’t the late Martin Luther King Jr., but his own work in Ferguson and beyond has helped the cause and essentially forced mainstream media to pay attention to the cases of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and the many others whose lives were lost due to police violence.

Williams used a few retweets from fans to reiterate his statement about the activist, but it looks like the damage is already done.

Note to Hannity and Williams — keep your flawed logic to yourself. Or Twitter will set you straight.
