A vaccine for the highly contagious and deadly Ebola virus has proved to be 100 percent effective, the World Health Organization announced Friday.

Tests show that a single dose of the newly developed vaccine, VSV-EBOV, is highly effective. Scientists hope the vaccine will prevent the spread of the virus, the latest of which swept over three West African nations in what was the largest outbreak in recent history. Trials for the vaccine began in March in Guinea, CNN reports.

“This is an extremely promising development,” said Dr. Margaret Chan, the body’s director-general.

“The credit goes to the Guinean government, the people living in the communities and our partners in this project. An effective vaccine will be another very important tool for both current and future Ebola outbreaks.”

More research is needed, but the results so far on this trial show 100% efficacy. It will take weeks at the least, and possibly a couple of months, for more supply to be made, according to Chan.

In a statement, the WHO confirmed that more than 4,000 close contacts of Ebola patients have participated in the trial. Additionally, the vaccine has been given to more than 1,000 health workers, members of burial teams and cleaning staff.
