A hearing has been set in the case of two Louisiana officers who fatally shot a six-year-old boy during a vehicle pursuit last week.
City marshals Derrick Stafford, 32, and Norris Greenhouse Jr., 23, were charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder on Friday, CNN reports. Stafford and Greenhouse were in pursuit of the boy’s father, Chris Few, last Tuesday when they shot into his SUV. The child, Jeremy Mardis, was shot multiple times as he sat in the car’s front passenger seat.
Few is in serious condition while recovering from his injuries at a local hospital.
Both officers are being held without bail. The hearing is expected to take place Monday afternoon.
Details surrounding the pursuit are currently unknown. A source tells NBC News Few was at a local pool hall and was seen arguing with his girlfriend before the shooting. After the alleged dispute, he headed to a babysitter’s house to pick up his son. Greenhouse allegedly knew Few, a factor that will also be looked at further during the investigation.
Few did not have outstanding warrants and there was no weapon found in his car. Initial reports claimed Few backed his truck into the officers, but there was little sign of damage on the police vehicle. State Police Col. Michael Edmonson told reporters on Sunday “disturbing” body camera footage gave police cause to charge the officers.
CNN reports:
“I’ve been a police officer for 35 years, but as a father — much less as a state police — it was a disturbing, disturbing video that I watched, and that really helped move us forward,” state police Col. Michael Edmonson said Sunday. “I’ve got to deal in facts. What’s important to me is what caused those police officers to pursue,” Edmonson said. “What caused them to open fire?”
Jeremy was a first grader who was also living with autism. His teacher tells CNN he enjoyed class and playing with his friends. He will be laid to rest at a memorial Monday afternoon in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
