The father of a 19-year-old man killed by the Chicago police on Saturday has filed a lawsuit against the city. The family's attorney confirmed the news with NBC News on Monday. Filed two days after the death of Quintonio LeGrier, the young man's father

Arguing that Quintonio LeGrier, 19, was unarmed when Chicago police shot and killed him over the weekend, his father on Monday filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the city, reports DNAinfo Chicago.

The shooting on Saturday was the latest in a string of high-profile deaths in the city that have drawn attention to police tactics and questions about oversight by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Per DNAinfo:

Antonio LeGrier charged in the suit, filed Monday in Cook County Circuit Court, that his 19-year-old son “never had possession or control of a weapon” when police arrived at the site of the shooting on the 4700 block of West Erie Street early Saturday morning.

Quintonio, whom the suit identified as a Northern Illinois University engineering student, “never did anything that suggested that he was armed with a weapon” and “never posed a danger or threat of harm to any Chicago Police officer,” the suit charged. Thus his death had “no probable cause,” and “the use of force was excessive and unreasonable.”

According to a police report, officers were called to the scene when Antonio LeGrier called saying his son was swinging a baseball bat in an upstairs apartment in the early morning hours Saturday. Bettie Jones, 55, was shot answering the door, with police reporting she was “accidentally shot and tragically killed.”

Emanuel, who was on vacation in Cuba with his family at the time of the shooting, announced plans late Monday to end the holiday trip early to deal with the fallout from the latest police-involved death, his staff announced.
