A man in New York City was crushed to death by a falling elevator after he pushed a woman out of the way on New Year’s Eve.

According to the NY Daily News, 25-year-old Stephen Hewett-Brown was crushed by the elevator just a few minutes before midnight on the holiday. He later died at a hospital.

A witness at the scene, Manuel Coronado, told the outlet that the man was stuck “between the elevator and the building door.” He added, “He [Brown] was saying ‘I can’t breathe’ and added that when Coronado tried to pull him up he said to leave him.”

He continued to explain the incident, “She started going in, but the elevator started going down and he pushed her out,. He said ‘Happy New Year’ and pushed her out.”

Witnesses also say that help didn’t arrive on the scene for about 20-30 minutes, and Brown was taken to the hospital with “traumatic arrest.”

Reports also say that this isn’t the first time that the building’s elevator has had problems, as it was stuck about two months ago.

Our condolences go out to Brown’s loved ones during this tragic time.
