The troubling crime rate has carried over into the new year in Chicago, with over 100 shootings recorded in just ten days, DNA Info reports.

Just over the weekend, seven people were killed and 30 were wounded. The devastating shootings happened during a grocery store robbery and another at a party just a few blocks from the home of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. In total, 19 people have been killed and 101 wounded in the first ten days of the year, The Chicago Tribune reports.

DNA Info compared the statistics to last year, revealing the early days of 2015 reported six fatal shootings and 38 wounded.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi explained that most of the shootings involved illegal guns and stemmed from petty disputes between gangs on social media.

DNA Info reports:

“Every year Chicago Police recover more illegal guns than officers in any other city, and as more and more illegal guns continue to find their way into our neighborhoods it is clear we need stronger state and federal gun laws,” Guglielmi said in the statement. “So far this year, the majority of the gun violence we’ve seen are a result of chronic gang conflicts driven in part by social media commentary and petty disputes among rival factions. Despite an overall lack of cooperation from gang members, detectives are working aggressively and making optimistic progress in several cases.”

Social activist and prominent priest Rev. Michael Pfleger of Auburn Gresham’s St. Sabina Church took his outrage to Facebook following news of the shootings.

Residents have pointed to corruption, gangs, and a failure to identify suspects in various shootings. Guglielmi said efforts will be made to enforce more police presence and training in the city.

“Going forward, CPD will continue to relentlessly target gun offenders,” Guglielmi said adding that McCarthy’s replacement, Supt. John Escalante “has increased the deployment of gang enforcement teams to help address possible acts of retaliation” in areas where shootings have occurred.

The majority of shootings last year occurred in the West Side of Chicago, followed by Englewood and New City.
