Maiduguri (Nigeria) (AFP) - Two suicide bombers kill 22 in NE Nigeria mosque. Duration:00:52

The Nigerian Islamic terrorist group Boko Haram has been on the defensive, but shows no signs of quitting its insurgency.

Nigerian army officials said two female suicide bombers attacked a mosque, killing at least 22 worshippers and injuring 18 others, BBC News reports.

The attack took place March 16 in the Northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri as morning prayers began. An imam told BBC the first bomber blew herself up inside the Umarari mosque, and the other attacker struck moments later outside as worshippers fled.

Maiduguri is home base to Boko Haram, which has pledged allegiance to ISIS. Since 2009, the group has killed more than 20,000 people in its mission to carve out an Islamic state in northern Nigeria. This is the same group that abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in 2014.

In recent months, a coalition of Nigerian troops and soldiers from neighboring countries have driven back the insurgents, pushing the terrorists out of Maiduguri and other towns they seized.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari told BBC in December that his troops have “technically won the war.”

He said Boko Haram has not been able to launch bold attacks against Nigerian troops. Instead, they now rely on tactics that utilize female suicide bombers against soft targets, and improvised explosives.
