A 37-year-old South Carolina mom was fatally shot when she was caught in the crosshairs of random gunfire about midnight Saturday while seated inside a home in Gastonia, North Carolina, just hours before her sister-in-law’s funeral, according to The Charlotte Observer

The victim, Jacobia Lane, along with an estimated 30 people, had gathered inside the home to mourn her sister-in-law, who recently died of cancer. Lane, who traveled to Gastonia with her two children and husband, was sitting on the couch when she was struck in the back of the head, the report says.

Lane’s 16-year-old daughter and her 13-year-old son were in the living room and witnessed their mother’s tragic death, according to the Gaston Gazette.

Around 30 bullets were fired into the home, and police are investigating the motive, The Observer reports.

After laying his wife to rest on Saturday, Lane’s brother, Timothy English, made an emotional plea for the shooters to come forward, WSOCTV reports.

“We don’t want no one else to hurt like we’re hurting,” English said in the television interview. “Just please do the right thing, that’s all I ask.”

“We want them to come forward and face justice,” Lane’s husband said in an interview with WSOCTV.

According to The Observer, a bullet struck a pillow just inches away from Lane’s husband, who was sleeping on the second floor at the time of the shooting.

A teen, whose name has been withheld, was struck in the arm, but is recovering, police told WSOCTV.

Police are still searching for the shooter or shooters, while Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest, The Observer writes.
