Ok, I know I’m very late to this discussion, but I thought I’d add my two cents worth in defence of Casey’s article.

I think many of you have missed the point and taken this article way too seriously. Reading the humour in the article it’s obviously meant to be tongue-in-cheek. At least partly.

The article is funny, but also quite true. Yes many of the 10 reasons can be seen as stereotypes, but isn’t that a big part of what racial/cultural identity is about? Much of racial identity is about the things you do, the lifestyle you live, and the way people and society will perceive you and treat you.

The important thing to consider is that the term “black” is a socio-political term. Think of how the term has been used throughout American (and European) history.

Think how 7/8ths white Homer Plessy was discriminated against as black. Think how half white Booker T Washington was seen as black by white people that were enraged at his invitation to the White House.

Think about how the term “black” is still used today, especially when it was an issue during the election campaign.

This isn’t about SEMANTIC reality, it’s about social, political, and historical reality.

Ultimately it’s a SILLY debate.

There are too many people complaining about Barack Obama being president. But the thing that gets me is that a lot of these people who are complaining most likely voted for him. Also, he is now our first “colored” president. Now you can take that how you want to but my history books taught me that colored people were not white people. Let’s be happy that we actually have a president that is trying to do something about this messed-up (lack of a better computer word) country. God Bless the President-Elect, God Bless America. Let’s focus on that, our economy, and our soldiers who are still fighting for their lives and missing what is going on over here.

Honestly, you dropped the ball HARD on this article! I have a question-why is it that black people are the only people that has these crazy rules for determining if someone is black? Growing up, I had so many bleck people either say that I am not black or call me an “oreo” because I don’t fit the mold of all of the “other black people”-and to this day, they still do!

I think its funny how an Ivy League school graduate wrote this article that depicts stereotypes and prejudice within our own community.This is why black people from afrika, caribbean, and pacific islands will never be united as a people because we pigeonhole ourselves to stereotypical identifications and boxes rather than broaden our horizon to out differences and achievements.However, it seems like the writer needs acceptance from our community to why he wrote this article. On top of that, for an educated black man(writer) that perpetautes that Obama is the first black president is an oxymoron because educated most of the time means conscious.Yet again, miseducation is more appropriate to convey. Being a bi-racial person myself, I find this article to be a slap in the face. The only acceptable statements made here are that people of a multi-racial background are characterised as black if they have any african american blood in thier heritage. However that doesnt mean there accepted as black by thier peers.

I dont think Obama would have been readily accepted by black society if he wasnt famous. That tends to be the mentality that (when Bi-racial)your not good enough to be black unless your famous/successful (or female). I’ve been told this…and it shows in the way many full blacks treat half black people. I still consider myself black even if Im not accepted in the traditional sense by many black men and women. This is on point except for #9, I understand the point that Biracial doesn’t indicate what racial groups you belong to, but then they went on to this biracial doesn’t signify a cultural identity or have a history. Biracial isn’t anything new or insignificant. Obama IN PART won this election because of his history and experience as a biracial child. That’s how he was able to navigate the election without scaring off one side or offending the other. Biracial culture is about connecting our dual identities. That’s our culture.
