DENVER — In response to the U.S. Department of Education’s release of the “Gainful Employment” rule, the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women (NOBEL/Women) strongly believes that the U.S. Department of Education must support the goal of increasing the number of college graduates among students rather than barring students from attaining higher education.

On behalf of NOBEL/Women, Senator Sharon Weston Broome, the National President of NOBEL/Women, made the following statement today:

“Regulations proposed by the U.S. Department of Education should promote fair and equal access to all institutions of higher education and career aspirations should be a matter of choice for those pursuing a higher education – the ‘gainful employment’ rule jeopardizes all of these goals.

Instead of proposing a rule that will make it harder for African American students to receive a college degree, the U.S. Department of Education should carefully study the impact of the debt service-to-income ratio included in proposed ‘Gainful Employment’ language on African American and historically underserved communities before any such rule may be implemented.”
