I think the problem is that some people are attention whores and want people to feel one particular way about what they show the world. Since I’m not being racist (I would ask Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or Richard Branson the exact same question if they got they teenage son a Maybach as their first car too) I expect an answer. I’m waiting….

A Maybach – at sixteen? Really? Are you kidding me? Personally, I don’t think any teenager should be given a gift of that magnitude. If he gets a Maybach when he’s sixteen, what does he have to strive for? Where does he go from here? You have to walk before you crawl.

However, believe me, Diddy did not pay Maybach’s list price for his son’s car. When Mercedes decided to manufacture an automobile that would be competitive with the Rolls Royce, the design and engineer team went to work thinking that they had a good shot at getting a fair share of the ULTRA LUXURY AUTOMILE market, but it has not worked out that way. Maybach sales are still sluggish.

My marketing savvy is telling me that the OEMs practically gave Diddy this car for the free publicity it would generate for them. This story has been on almost every news outlet and media platform, including the highly rated NightLine. Every time this story is told, the Maybach is displayed in its full luxurious glory. Maybach couldn’t have asked for better advertising or promotion. The publicity that they have received from this story cost them far less than it would have cost them to launch an advertising campaign that would have reached the same number of potential buyers. It’s smart marketing…

I don’t know if Maybach came to Diddy with the idea, or Diddy came to them, but I am confident that Diddy paid very little for this automobile – if anything at all. With the cache of Diddy’s name, the grandiose, lavish sweet (but manly) sixteen party, and the sheer ostensible audacity of conspicuous consumption, both Maybach and Diddy knew that this purchase would receive tons of publicity – and they were right. That’s why the rich keeps getting richer: people love to give them things for free because they know that they will ultimately get something back in return

I see, on one hand, the excess given to our children and think “WTF is that parent giving that child such expensive clothes and things for, they will have no appreciation for earning it?”. I mean when a 12yo walks around in all Polo, and Gucci sneakers, cmon people…..

On the other hand, I think to myself “More people should spoil their children. It might be good motivation. Hell, It was good enough for the Kennedy family!”.

I guess it all lies in how the parent teaches their child, and how the child responds, maturity, responsibility….. Still vexed……
