By the year 2042, according to an analysis by the Brookings Institution, the United States will be “majority-minority”—more than half the population will be made up of ethnic and racial groups currently in the minority: blacks and Hispanics.
Demographers at Brookings, a widely respected think tank known for its usually moderate stance, came to this conclusion after analyzing U.S. Census Bureau data. In the institution’s “The State of Metropolitan America” report released in May, the analysts put forth the following assertion: “According to the Census Bureau’s most recent estimates, the U.S. population will become minority white in the year 2042, at which time Hispanics would comprise 27 percent of the population, blacks 12 percent and Asians 7 percent.”

Those groups would make up about 46 percent of the population, while another approximate 5 percent would be of mixed race.

The under-18 population will reach the minority-majority tipping point much sooner. By 2023—just 13 years from now—the majority of Americans under the age of 18 will not be white. In fact, in the nation’s largest metropolitan areas, that has already happened.
