A jail official says a former transit police officer who allegedly shot dead an unarmed man on an Oakland train platform on New Year’s Day has been arrested in Nevada.

A Douglas County jail official confirmed that 27-year-old Johannes Mehserle was in custody Tuesday night under a fugitive warrant issued in California. The official would not give their name because the arrest had not been announced.

Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff is expected to announce details of the arrest Wednesday. There was no immediate word on what the charges of Mehserle faces.

Witnesses say Mehserle shot 22-year-old Oscar Grant in the back while he was lying facedown. The shooting was captured on video and has led to numerous protests.

Mehserle resigned his position last week from the Bay Area Rapid Transit.
