Republicans have been making hay of comedian Stephen Colbert’s credentials as an expert witness on farm workers. And after two hours in a witness seat before a House Judiciary panel in a crowded hearing room, he left many of the lawmakers scratching their heads.

During his testimony, Colbert stayed in the character he plays on his show, “The Colbert Report” – a shallow, faux-right-wing news show host who doesn’t let facts inform his opinions. And he drew on his one-day experience at an upstate New York vegetable farm last month as part of a United Farm Workers Association campaign for a program that lets Mexicans and others enter the U.S. legally to work the fields.
