Cops Say Man Was Stabbed In Barfight Over Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry

    BRANFORD, Conn. — Police say a New Hampshire man has been stabbed in a bar fight over the New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox rivalry.

    Police in the Connecticut shoreline town Branford arrested New Haven resident John Mayor on Saturday night. They say he stabbed Nashua, N.H., resident Monte Freire.

    A dispute pitting a Boston Red Sox fan from New Hampshire against a New York Yankees fan from New Haven turned ugly at the Chowder Pot III Restaurant Saturday night, landing both men in the hospital and resulting in the Yankees fan’s arrest after he allegedly stabbed the Red Sox fan, police said.

    The New Hampshire man and Red Sox fan, Monte Freire, 43, of Nashua, was in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he underwent surgery after initially being treated at the scene by Branford Fire Department paramedics, said police Capt. Geoffrey Morgan.
