A 22-year-old man who plotted a 2008 killing spree that included the intended assassination of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama has been sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Daniel Cowart was sentenced Friday. He pleaded guilty in March to eight federal charges related to a plot to kill 88 African-Americans and behead 14 others before trying to take out Obama. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist movement.

Cowart apologized to the African-American community, Obama and his family.

Another man charged in the plot, Paul Schlesselman, is serving a 10-year prison term.
