Mariana Bridi da Costa, 20, contracted a seemingly ordinary urinary tract infection. Her boyfriend, Thiago Simoes, told the G1 news website that Miss Bridi fell ill on Dec 30, but was initially misdiagnosed with kidney stones. She returned to a hospital on Jan 3 in septic shock – life-threatening low blood pressure – from the infection, the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, that would force doctors to amputate first her feet, then her hands.

Doctors said there was little they could do but pump drugs into her and hope for the best. But by Saturday she was dead.

Bridi’s website says she began modelling at age 14 with the hope of giving “a dignified life to her parents”.

Her father is a taxi driver and her mother a house cleaner.

Miss Bridi twice made it into the national finals for the Miss World contest, and last year travelled to China to participate in the Miss Bikini International pageant, G1 said.
