Michael Phelps’ recent admission of marijuana use opens up up an interesting question. Why do so many athletes use marijuana and what negative affects does it have on them? Some of the best athletes in the USA have either admitted to or been caught smoking marijuana. Here is our Top 5 Weedhead Athletes.

1. Ricky Williams.

Ricky Williams was the Heisman Trophy Winner in 1998. In 2004 Williams tested positive for marijuana. Williams has dealt with social anxiety and depression and has freely admitted to using marijuana. For a time Williams advertised the prescription drug Paxil. However he later would say marijuana had far less side affects than Paxil, and tell ESPN that “Marijuana is 10 times better for me than Paxil.” Williams admitted to 60 Minutes that the reason he retired from the NFL was to be able to smoke weed. He later would claim he’d quit smoking marijuana in 2006, only to test positive again in 2007.

2. Josh Howard

Charles Oakley said of the NBA, “you got guys out there playing high every night..You got 60 percent of your league on marijuana. What can you do?” Many people have put the percentage of people who smoke in the NBA higher than that. Still while many NBA players have been caught with marijuana. The only person to recently publicly admit to smoking marijuana in the NBA is Josh Howard, forward for the Dallas Mavericks. Howard would admit to smoking marijuana on Michel Irvin’s ESPN show and later say  “I just let him know that most of the players in the league use marijuana and I have and do partake in smoking weed in the offseason”

3. Randy Moss

Randy Moss is one of the NFL’s greatest receivers of all time. Moss has been caught with marijuana and has also admitted to smoking marijuana on HBO’s Real Sports With Brian Gumbel. On the show he said “I have used, you know, marijuana … since I’ve been in the league….But as far as abusing it and, you know, letting it take control over me, I don’t do that, no….hopefully … I won’t get into any trouble by the NFL by saying that, you know. I have had fun throughout my years and, you know, predominantly in the offseason.”

4. Michael Phelps

Phelps was America’s Olympic hero in 2008’s bejing Olympics. He was promoted as an All-American, squeaky clean role model. Guess what America? All-Americans kids smoke weed not just black athletes.

5.Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem is one of the few athletes who can claim they have a prescription to smoke marijuana, which he says he uses to control nausea and migraine headaches. He has been arrested twice for marijuana possession but has a prescription to smoke marijuana in the state of California.
